Use anti-virus & firewall software

A computer virus is a type of software programme designed by programmers to create chaos, destroy your computer files, and steal your personal data. Provident strongly recommend that you use both anti-virus software and a firewall to protect your computer when accessing the internet. If you do not have any of this protection then every time you surf the internet your computer is at risk.

Keep your computer updated

If you already have anti-virus and firewall software installed then it is essential to regularly download software updates for your computer. New viruses are being created daily so doing this will ensure your computer is protected against the latest ones.

‘Symptoms’ of a computer virus

There are a number of symptoms to look out for that could mean your computer has a virus;

• Your computer runs slower than normal

• Your computer restarts on its own

• You can’t print correctly

• Disks or disk drives are inaccessible

• Unusual error messages appear

• Applications don’t run correctly

• You see distorted menus and dialog boxes

• Your computer stops responding

• Your computer crashes and restarts often

It is possible to buy software that will get rid of any viruses that may be on your computer. However, it is best to install anti-virus software so you are protected against viruses before they attack your computer.

Email

There’s an increasing trend for fraudsters to use email to target their victims. Emails are used to spread viruses, worms and ‘Trojan horse’ software that can give them control over your computer. If you do not know the source of an email or do not recognise the sender, then delete it without opening any attachments.

Provident may send you emails from time to time for marketing purposes. However, the only time we will ask you to fill in your personal details in on our application form. We will never ask you to send us any of your personal details or your bank details in an email. We will also never ask you to give us a deposit before you receive your loan. If you receive any suspicious emails like this then call us on 0800 409 6654 and let us know.

‘Phishing’

This is the name given to the use of bogus emails or fraudulent websites that are designed to deceive you into providing personal financial information such as passwords, account numbers and usernames. The fraudster can then use this information to access your account. This fraud involves emails being sent by fraudsters masquerading as other companies or banks requesting your personal details – otherwise known as ‘phishing’

We must emphasise that Provident will never ask for personal details in this way. If you think that you have been a victim of a scam or have received a suspicious email, you can report it at;
