What Do You Know About Dragon Boat Racing?

Well, some of our Provident colleagues are part of a local team called the Bradford Barracudas. But, did you know we’ve also got our very own team; the ProviDucks.

A Dragon Boat is a long ship similar to a Viking longboat and made to look like a Dragon.

Dragon Boating started in China 2,000 years ago. In 1986 it hit our shores as a community sports activity and has been growing ever since.

Dragon Boating reached Provident in 2015 when Dragon Boat racing first came to Bradford, much to the interest of Provident colleagues.

Crosby Regatta

Earlier this month, a team including colleagues from Provident called the Bradford Barracudas took part in the Crosby Regatta and came home with an impressive 1st Place Bowl Trophy for the 450m race event, beating off more experienced opposition with by almost 2 boat lengths.

They also took part in a dragon boat marathon down the Victorian era Trans-Pennine superhighway that is the Leeds-Liverpool canal.

The herculean 127 mile trip took seven days to complete. The team negotiated 91 locks and a three mile tunnel under the Pennines in pitch black along with around 60 swing bridges. The event was the first ever of its kind in a non-motorised boat. The team raised funds for the Merseyside and Cheshire Blood Bikers, a group of volunteers who deliver blood to emergencies including road traffic accidents and vital organs for the NHS.

Bradford Dragon Boat Festival

The Provi-Ducks also took part in the Bradford Dragon Boat festival the day before the final leg of the Trans-Pennine event. The charity event saw teams compete to be crowned the Bradford Dragon Boat Champions 2016.

44 teams took part in the event, with races taking place throughout the day. After a long and gruelling day, the ProviDucks finished a very respectable third. The Provi-Ducks achieved the overall fastest timing of the day at an amazing 51 seconds for a 200metre race.

All money raised was in aid of the Lord Mayors Appeal and Spread a Smile which is raising money for a sensory room at The Bradford Royal Infirmary.

Team GB

But that’s not all. Our very own Tracy-Marie Dickenson is currently training with the Team GB Senior A Dragon Boat Racing Team to compete in the IDBF European Championships 2016, taking place in Rome in July, where she is hoping to bring home a few gold medals.

Tracy, a PA to the Chief Information Officer and Travel Contract Manager, is training every day of the week, but is also travelling to squad training sessions at weekends too to fulfil her role as drummer and paddler.

We wish her all the best!

The rest, as they say, is history. Watch this space for more Dragon Boat updates!
