Five Instruments You Can Make In Five Minutes

Arts and Crafts

To celebrate Kids Music Day we’ve put together this list of musical instruments you can make in five minutes. They’re kid friendly and creative, plus you get the joys of whatever sweet, sweet music your children can make.

Bottle Shaker

So simple, but your little one will love it. Mine played with hers as soon as she learned to grab things, right up until she was over 12 months old (a lifetime in baby toys).

What you need:

  • An old water bottle, washed.
  • Filler for your bottle. This can be rice, pasta, dried beans or peas.
  • Glitter (optional)
  • Glue
  • Sticky backed plastic
  • Paper and felt tips

How to make it:

  • Add the filler to your bottle. You can add as much or as little as you like.
  • Glue the bottle lid onto the bottle.
  • Decorate the outside of your bottle.
  • Shake!

Balloon Skin Drum

Because every household needs a drum!

What you need:

  • Tin can or crisp tube packet
  • A balloon
  • A rubber band
  • Wooden spoon/teaspoon
  • Scissors

How to make it:

  • Take the balloon and cut the mouthpiece.
  • Stretch the balloon over the crisp tube.
  • Wrap the rubber band around the crisp tube.
  • Use the wooden spoon and/or teaspoon to hit the drum.

Straw Pan Pipes

A little different from your shaking and banging instruments, the straw pan pipe can offer a more refined instrument for your household. If you’re lucky, perhaps you may hear something resembling a tune.

What you need:

  • 8 straws
  • Sticky back plastic
  • Scissors
  • A ruler

How to make it:

  • Take a straw, use the ruler to measure 20cm and cut it. Take another straw and make it 2cm smaller than the first straw. Repeat this until there’s no straws left.
  • Place the straws in order from longest to shortest and then stick them together.
  • Blow across the straws to hear the different sounds.

Didgeridoo

This is the simplest instrument to make, literally just decorate and go!

What you need:

  • Wrapping paper tube
  • Felt tip pens/paints/decoration
  • Sticky backed plastic

How to make it:

  • Decorate the tube
  • Blow

Castanets

Get into the Spanish frame of mind and make some castanets! Why not make a day of it and eat tapas and flamenco dance?!

What you need:

  • A paper plate
  • 6 buttons or bottle caps
  • Superglue
  • Felt tip pens/paint/decorations

How to make it:

  • Fold the paper plate in half and decorate it.
  • Place 3 of the buttons on the furthest edge from the fold on both sides of the plate and glue it down.
  • Tap until your heart’s content.
