Did you know that today is the 19th World Book Day? With the likes of ereaders and tablets taking over from the traditional paper and ink, there’s no better day to sit back and relax with your favourite novel or children’s book!

World Book Day is a worldwide celebration of books and reading, marked in over 100 countries around the world. It’s a day to celebrate books, authors, illustrators, and readers.

Reading with your children is a great way to build a strong bond with them from an early age, not to mention a fun experience for you to spend some quality time together. It also helps improve on their basic speech and understanding skills which will go on to help them in school.

The £1 Book Token

As part of the World Book Day celebrations, National Book Tokens have teamed up with schools around the country to give out free £1 book tokens.

All school children across the UK should receive a free £1 book token. Simply take the voucher to your local bookseller to redeem against one of ten new and exclusive books. Alternatively, if this doesn’t take your fancy, the voucher can be redeemed to get £1 off any book or audiobook costing over £2.99.

Where To Find Discounted Books

It doesn’t have to stop at World Book Day; getting hold of a great read doesn’t have to cost the earth. There are lots of places where you can pick up discounted books in your local community.

Charity shops
Charity shops usually have a generous selection of pre-loved books, and prices tend to be very low. It’s not uncommon to grab a bargain for as little as 20p!

The library
Public libraries are generally free to join and once you’re a member, you’ll have access to thousands of books and audiobooks. Libraries often host book sales where you can pick up ex-library books for yourself for just a fraction of the cost of a new one.

Car boot sales
Car boot sales are full of hidden gems so it’s easy to pick up a steal. As people are generally more focused on de-cluttering and not on making huge profits, items such as books usually carry a fairly cheap pricetag.

Free ebooks and reading apps
Aside from physical books themselves, there are lots of free apps that allow you to download ebooks and audiobooks to read or listen to on your phone or tablet; perfect for the commute to work!
